EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) Professional Training Course

Duration: 45-60 min Intermediate Certificate Course Updated Feb 2026

About course

The EU Deforestation Regulation changes what it means to source responsibly. It is no longer enough to know your tier-1 supplier. You need to know where the raw material came from, when that land was last forested, and whether you can prove it.

This course breaks down the regulation into what you actually need to do: identify your covered products, understand your obligations as an operator or trader, collect the right geolocation data, and submit a compliant Due Diligence Statement. By the end, you will know exactly where your supply chain stands and what needs to happen before the compliance deadline.

Course Outline

Section 1: What the EUDR Is and Why It Exists

  • Trace the regulation from its policy origins to its legal core, including the dual requirement of legality and deforestation-free production, the enforcement structure, and the penalty regime that backs it up.

Section 2: Who Is Covered and What Products Are in Scope

  • Identify the entities the regulation targets, distinguish between operator and trader obligations, map the seven commodities and their derived products, and understand how HS codes function as the product scope mechanism.

Section 3: The December 2020 Cut-Off Date and What 'Deforestation-Free' Actually Means

  • Examine the cut-off date rule in detail, including the definition of forest and forest degradation, how the rule applies to agricultural plantations, and what the legality requirement demands from operators beyond the deforestation-free standard.

Section 4: The Three-Step Due Diligence Process

  • Walk through information collection, risk assessment using country benchmarking and the EU Observatory, and risk mitigation for non-negligible findings, with detailed treatment of what enhanced scrutiny requires and how to work with smallholder suppliers.

Section 5: Geolocation, Traceability, and the Due Diligence Statement

  • Apply the specific technical requirements for coordinate precision, point versus polygon mapping, and the step-by-step process for submitting a Due Diligence Statement, verifying upstream DDS references, and understanding what happens if a DDS is rejected or disputed.

Section 6: Knowledge Check

  • Demonstrate your understanding of course concepts by working through ten scenario-based questions drawn from realistic supply chain situations.

Course Outcome

At the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Identify the seven commodities and their derived products that fall within the EUDR's scope.
  • Distinguish between the obligations of operators, non-SME traders, and SME traders under the regulation.
  • Apply the three-step due diligence process, including information collection, risk assessment, and risk mitigation, to a realistic supply chain scenario.
  • Interpret geolocation and traceability requirements, including the difference between point coordinates and polygon mapping.
  • Evaluate whether a sourcing scenario meets the deforestation-free and legality requirements using the country benchmarking system and the EU Observatory.
